I am emailing over photos of the back of the one we carry from Daniel Carpenter. They do have the piece of plastic in the back that fits over the pins. I am not sure if this will help, the best recommendation we have is to use a two part epoxy instead of the thicker tape to prevent the gap. This will do damage to the paint if you have to remove them though, so you will need to decide if that is worth it to take the risk. Also any epoxy that leaks around the edge could be a problem. You might also look for a thinner strip adhesive. We don't have any experience installing these without the pins, we wish you the best of luck, and we would be interested in what you end up using if you care to share when it is done. We do have to say, because our experience is lacking, these are just suggestions and we are not sure they will work.
