Classic Mustang Instrument Bezels, What’s The Difference?

Ever wonder what the differences were between the 1965 and 1966 instrument panel bezels in your classic Mustang? Well, the answer is both simple and complex! As you know, Ford offered a plethora of options on these models and the dash bezel configurations were most often tied to the interior option installed in the car from the factory. The 1965 Mustang instrument bezels came with these options:

So, in 1966 Ford adopted the 5-dial instrumentation gauges used on the previous year’s GT models and eliminated the warning light based panel used as standard equipment in 1965. To the left of the circular speedometer in the middle were fuel and oil pressure gauges and to the right were the amp and temperatures gauges. This gave Mustangs in 1966 a racier look and let you dream of places to take your Pony to max out the 140 mph speedo. It is interesting to note that to update the standard interior bezel, Ford added full bezel outline trim rings while maintaining the partial outline for the Interior Decor option bezel of 1965 for 1966 as well. One last note of interest, the 1966 standard instrument panels had two turn signal indicator replacing the single indicator in 1965. This made it quicker and easier for the driver to visually identify the correct set of exterior lights were indicating your intentions to other drivers!

So, go ahead and personalize your standard interior 1966 with the Mustang instrument bezels for the wood grain look or change your Interior Decor bezel to the standard black camera-case finish…they are both available!

I started working on cars when I was 13 years old and have spent the last 35 years in the automotive industry. After graduating from San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino, CA, I was able to attend San Bernardino Valley College, Cal Poly Pomona, and USC earning Associate of Science, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and Master of Science in Systems Engineering Degrees. I have been fortunate to work in the OEM, OES, Aftermarket, and SEMA automotive segments focused primarily in design engineering, manufacturing, and operations management. While at Subaru I was driver and one of several team engineers involved in setting two Bonneville land speed records in I/Pro class at the 1988 & 1989 Speed Weeks...a record that still stands today. From Subaru, I went on to work stints as Director of Engineering at Thermal Dynamics and Fluidyne Racing Products, Director of Engineering at Wynn's Climate Systems, and General Manager at Standard Motor Products / Four Seasons Mfg Division with operations in US and Mexico.
