1965 Mustang Information

The Mustang was changed a bit for 1965 production (in August of 1964 the plant was shut down for retooling) and the 1965 Mustang Fastback was introduced for the first time. Ford also replaced the electrical generator with an alternator in August. The best way to tell if it is an early 1965 Mustang or Late 1965 Mustang is to see if the warning light on the dash says “GEN” or “ALT”. The GT package was available for the first time with the V8 engine, and the 1965 Mustang GT grille included built in fog lamps. There were actually more changes in the Mustang during the 1965 production year than there were changes made when the plant was retooled in August. This means there are more differences between the early and late 1965 Mustangs than there are between the ’65 and ’66. The 1965 Mustang GT package offered dual exhaust, and GT stripes. Other options were wood grain vinyl trim, embossed bucket seats, chrome riveted steering wheel, and courtesy lights. One option of note was the Interior Décor Group or “Pony Interior”, available in the  spring of ’65, featuring embossed horses on panels in the two-tone seat upholstery.
